Jennifer Higgie talks through Bedlam, her novel on Victorian painter Richard Dadd, twenty years since it first came out. Dadd killed his father in 1843 and spent the rest of his life inside Bethlem hospital, and Higgie spent years working out why that story still carries such clout.
