London history by era and area

Roman London (Londinium)

The City of London sits almost exactly where the Romans built Londinium in AD 43. History creators frequently document the fragments of Roman wall still visible today — including sections near Tower Hill and the Museum of London — and the amphitheatre buried beneath the Guildhall courtyard.

Medieval City & the Tower

The Tower of London and the surrounding Eastcheap and Aldgate areas hold some of the densest medieval history in the city. Narrow alleys that predate the Great Fire of 1666 still survive, and history creators have mapped dozens of sites where medieval London can still be felt beneath the modern city.

Victorian East End

Whitechapel, Spitalfields, and Bethnal Green were shaped by Victorian-era immigration, industry, and poverty. The Ripper-era streets, the surviving Huguenot weavers' houses on Fournier Street, and the old market buildings are all documented in detail by East London history creators.

WWII London & the Blitz

The Blitz left permanent marks on London's geography — bombsites that became parks, rebuilt street patterns, and shelters that still exist underground. History creators cover the Churchill War Rooms, surviving Anderson shelters, and the memorial sites of the most heavily bombed areas in East and South London.

South London & the Borough

Southwark and Borough have been part of London since before the Romans, yet often go unexplored. History creators document the medieval remains under Borough Market, the site of the original Globe Theatre, and the Victorian railway infrastructure that defines the area's skyline.

FAQ

Questions about London history creators

Who are the best history creators to follow in London?

The ranking on this page orders every UK history creator we track by a blend of audience reach, how consistently they publish, and how active the account still is. History with Alice, Living London History and Bowl of Chalk all sit near the top: the first on sheer reach, the other two on a deep, sustained body of London-specific work including bestselling books and their own walking tours.

What counts as a London history creator?

We're strict about this, because most 'best of' lists aren't. A creator only appears here if history is one of their two main subjects and their work is genuinely about London. That deliberately excludes food creators who occasionally cover a historic pub or chip shop, general London lifestyle accounts that touch on heritage, and history creators who are excellent but based in New York, Melbourne or elsewhere. It's a shorter list than it could be, and that's the point.

How is this ranking calculated?

Audience size does most of the work: a little over three quarters of a creator's score, log-scaled so that a handful of very large accounts don't flatten everyone else into a tie. The rest comes from how consistently they publish, whether the account is verified and still active, and a small weighting for how much of the city they've mapped with us. Being on Lets Discover earns a creator nothing here — several of the highest-ranked creators on this page have no account with us at all. We rank by that score but don't publish the number itself, because a single figure invites arguments it can't settle.

What does 'Request a map' mean?

Most London history creators aren't on Lets Discover yet. Requesting a map registers your interest in that specific creator, so we know which creators our audience most wants mapped and can prioritise reaching out to them.

Where can I find content about London's hidden history?

London history creators on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube regularly post about hidden historical sites, forgotten stories, and lesser-known landmarks. On Lets Discover, you can follow these creators directly and access every location they've featured — making it easy to turn their content into a real walking experience.

Are there walking tour creators in London?

Yes. Several creators in the ranking specialise in documenting historical walking routes through London neighbourhoods. Their recommendation maps can be used as a self-guided walking tour, with each pin linking to additional information about the location's history.

Can I become a London history creator on Lets Discover?

Yes. If you create content about London's history, landmarks, or architecture, you can apply to join Lets Discover as a creator. We build your recommendations map for free, turning your content into a mapped, bookable collection that your followers can explore in person.

What is a London history creator?

A London history creator is a content creator — active on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or all three — who specialises in uncovering the historical layers of the city. They are part local historian, part storyteller, and part urban explorer. Their content might cover a Roman wall hidden inside a modern office building, the Blitz-era shelter under your local pub, or the story of a street that changed its name four times in 500 years.

Unlike academic historians, London history creators communicate through video, photography, and walking routes. They turn complex historical narratives into content that feels immediate and personal — standing at the exact spot where something happened, not describing it from a library desk. Their audiences tend to be deeply curious Londoners and visitors who want to experience the city at a different depth.

On Lets Discover, history creators map the physical places behind their stories — the pubs with secret histories, the blue plaque addresses, the alleyways that have existed since the medieval period. Followers can use these maps as the foundation for a self-guided walking experience through the city's past.

How to explore London's history through local creators

  1. 1
Find a creator in the ranking below:Every London history creator we track is listed, ordered by a blend of reach, publishing activity and how much of the city they've actually mapped. Whether your interest is medieval London, the East End, Victorian crime, or WWII, start with the people who cover it best.
  2. 2
Download their map, or request one:Creators marked 'On Lets Discover' have a live recommendation map you can open in the app right now. For the ones who aren't on the platform yet, you can request a map — and we'll work on getting their recommendations mapped.
  3. 3
Browse their mapped locations:Every location a history creator has featured is pinned on their interactive map. This includes historical sites, pubs with documented histories, blue plaque addresses, and hidden architectural gems.
  4. 4
Plan a self-guided walking route:Use a creator's map to build your own historical walking tour. Group nearby pins together to create a route through a specific neighbourhood or period of history.
  5. 5
Book a table at historically significant venues:Many of London's most historically interesting pubs, restaurants, and cafes are also bookable on Lets Discover. You can combine a history walk with a meal at a venue that's been serving Londoners for centuries.
